The Smart Ass
Big Names From the Bay
By Spencer Reynolds
The Bay Area: home to Silicon Valley, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the top public university in the world! But quite unknown is how the Bay Area was also home of two important Democratic politicians who got their start here. This fun article will be looking at those two important Democrats.
The Dove

The Dove, it never seems to fade
For dreams, you see, can’t die to blade
Alighting like a candle flame
In any heart that shrinks from shame
The Democrats:
By Daniel Ilagan
This was it. After a months-long, desperate struggle from the Democratic Party to stave off its own electoral annihilation, what was obvious to nearly everybody watching the election had become, effectively, official. Donald John Trump, 45th President of the United States, holder of 34 felony charges, and leader of the Republican Party, had won, becoming the 47th President-Elect of the United States.
Furries and MAGA: How the Republican Party is Using Furries as a Vehicle for Anti-Queer Policy
By Evalyn Ann Flores
Throughout the first half of this decade, Furries have become a contentious and non-consenting "belligerent" in what can best be described as the vilification of queer people in the United States. MAGA politicians seeking to vilify LGBTQ+ people have used the stigma against furries as a vehicle to pass anti-queer laws across the country, as many of these “anti-furry” laws serve as launchpads to enact anti-queer laws such as “bathroom bans,” drag show bans, and bans on LGBTQ+ youth education.
Reform California’s Punitive System and Empower a Rehabilitative One
By Christine Ly
If your car mechanic tells you there is a 40% chance of your car breaking down again right after they fixed it, you would call that a bad mechanic. Well, that mechanic is just like the California incarceration system. Getting out of jail only to come back has to be one of its most unproductive qualities.
2026 Super Bowl Halftime Performance
By Breanna Banda
Last year, Kendrick Lamar used his Super Bowl performance to critique America. His performance relied heavily on symbolism, imagery, and song selection to discuss the racial inequality, state violence, and contradictions of American patriotism. Lamar’s performance showed the uncomfortable truth about who America uplifts and marginalizes, demonstrating how the Super Bowl can be used as a platform for political expression. This year’s halftime performance by Bad Bunny can similarly be understood as a political stance within the current immigration climate shaped by the Trump administration.
Donald Trump Has Already Hurt Your Club
By Audrey Kramer
Practically every student is in at least one organization, no matter where on the Grilled Cheese Club to Big Data at Berkeley spectrum they sit. Above it all presides our ASUC, the organization responsible for the establishment, support, and funding of these student groups. This is to say, touch the ASUC in some way, and the effect is felt across the entire RSO network, ultimately affecting every student on campus in some way. Donald Trump has done just that.
Unofficial DNC Autopsy of the 2024 Presidential Election
By Frank Granda
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has promised to release its autopsy, explaining why the results of the 2024 presidential election fell below expectations. However, as of the time of writing, no autopsy has been released publicly — meaning there is a gap that needs to be filled to account for the party’s recent failings. Presented here is a substitute meant to account for this sudden vacuum in inquiry and provide perspective as to what can be done to improve the chances of victory for the progressive movement and the wider Democratic Party at large.
By Richard Zeng
Currently, Democrats are facing a crisis regarding finding new leadership within the party. With many Democrats dissatisfied with Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and wondering about the future of the party without young people, it is clear that Democrats are struggling to stand up to the geriatric party leadership and actually inspire people to vote for them.
